Meet the Herd
Sky
Quarter Horse mare-born 1996
Sky was donated to our program in 2016 and is now enjoying retirement.
Ace
Quarter Horse gelding-born 2005
We purchased Ace from a friend in 2016. She rescued him several years earlier from being beaten and starved to the point that he could not be touched. He had lost most of his will to live. Through her love and gentle training he was completely transformed and has since competed in barrel racing, worked cattle, given lots of riding lessons, and ministered to military personnel returning from combat. He is a master at reading people and knows when to give hugs, when to instill confidence, and when to be mischievous and playful.
Big
Quarter Horse gelding- born approximately 2005
When Big and Doc’s previous owners introduced us to them, Big’s story broke my heart. Several years ago as they were looking for a companion for Doc, they were drawn to Big who was for sale at a Quarter Horse ranch. It was evident this underweight gelding had been abused. They soon discovered his tail had been broken and his raspy whinny testified that he’d also been strangled. Thankfully, Doc and our friends offered the stability and kindness Big needed to be their beloved trail riding companion.
Doc
Quarter Horse gelding-born approximately 2005
Doc arrived with his best friend Big in the fall of 2019. Our friends, who gave these boys a wonderful home for several years, knew they needed to stay together because of Big’s dependency on Doc. Being very smart and confident, Doc likes to take on challenges.
Charlie
Paint gelding- born approximately 2003
Our smallest member of the herd, Charlie is an awesome pony. Donated to the ranch in 2017, he had a traumatic past. He was removed from his home by law enforcement when he was nearly run over on a nearby interstate two separate times, escaping from less than ideal living conditions. A friend who worked at the vet clinic he was taken to adopted Charlie, rehabilitated him then gave him to us. The comment we hear most about him is how cute he is! Though very obedient, he was understandably guarded for awhile, and it’s been wonderful to see him trust us more and desire our company.
Dottie
Paint mare - born 2005
Dottie came to the ranch in 2019 from friends who competed with her, then loaned her to 4-H members working on equine skills. She is intelligent and loves personal attention.
In Loving Memory
Babe
Quarter Horse/Foxtrotter gelding - late 1980’s-2021
Babe was abandoned on a friend's farm where he was just hanging out with cows and feasting on lush, green grass. We brought him home and discovered him to be well-trained and gentle enough for anyone to ride! Sadly, during his time with the cows, he had foundered. Due to the resulting health issues and old age, he is retired from riding, but remains the beloved beginning of our herd.
Timber
Paint mare - 1996-2022
We purchased this big girl from friends in 2003 to be a companion for our first horse, Babe. She is strong-willed and became the boss mare as the herd grew. She can be misunderstood as stubborn, but is really eager to please those she trusts as her leader. As we all do, she thrives on encouragement and praise!
Haven
Quarter Horse mare - 1998-2021
We purchased Haven in 2013. She is very smart and has an impressive cow-horse bloodline. She is retired from riding because of arthritis, but serves as a companion for our gelding Babe.
Rafie
Paint gelding - approximately 2005-2022
Rafie is small in stature, but has a huge heart and personality. He was given to us by an equine therapy program in 2012. He loves to jump, be sprayed with water on hot days, and is quite the ladies’ man! He is taking a break from riding as he has been diagnosed with COPD. With good nutrition and various therapies, we are praying for his complete recovery.
Durango
Quarter Horse/Thoroughbred gelding - approximately 2003-2022
Friends donated Durango to the ranch in 2018 after owning him a short time due to selling their property. They felt this sweet and sensitive guy would be a good fit for our program. We know very little of his story before his time with our friends, but it is evident he has experienced some trauma. As we work through a long-standing physical issue we’re hoping he will become part of the riding program soon.
